Kenny Burrell has long been a superb guitarist, and has continued to play his bluesy brand of hard bop through multiple changes in jazz styles. Lucky So and So finds him in a comfortable quartet setting, with keyboardist Onaje Allan Gumbs, bassist Rufus Reid, and drummer Akira Tana bopping their way through a lively traditional set. Jan 01,  · One of the few Kenny Burrell albums I am unable to really enjoy. It's a shame too, because the best guitar pieces are fine indeed. This rendition of Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" is gorgeous, and the quartet interplay between Burrell, Gumbs (keyboards), Reid (bass) and Tana (drums) is /5(4).

While Lucky So And So is far from a vocal album, the richness of Burrell's voice on so many of the tracks distinguishes it from his past work. What also distinguishes Lucky So And So is the sensitivity of his backup trio of.

Sep 01,  · The title tune is so relaxed, Burrell even talks a bit about its composer, Ellington, in the middle of it. But another Duke classic, “Squeeze Me,” steals the show as Burrell superimposes scat (he favors the “D” sound) over the vamp, an ostinato figure that is a half tone short of an octave.

Aug 04,  · Wow! So many replies! I have only a few of the albums mentioned, and I'm definitely going to check out the Ike Quebec. I've been listening to jazz for nearly three years, and each album opens up new roads to different artists, genres, means of expression, etc.
